I suppose, you could say I’m something of an oddity. I’m a native of Columbus, Ohio. Few people can make such a claim today. Most of the residents who populate our fair city are transplants from somewhere else. Growing up in, what seemed at the time, the cultural backwash of America I held only one vision sacred- blowing out of town on the first thing smoking that would transport me to civilization. I was certain that cities such as Chicago, Boston or the cultural epicenter of the planet- New York City were where I would land and lay down my literary roots. Well, guess what? After living in Chicago, Denver, Washington, D.C. and even a brief stint “down” South, where some of America’s greatest literary giants penned their best work, I felt much like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz- “There’s no place like home.” And you know what? I feel pretty good about it- after all, it’s not the place that’s so important…it’s the people. And strange as it may seem to those of you not from Columbus- I genuinely like the ease of a somewhat slower paced Midwestern existence.
And while I absolutely love the shore, my better half and I tend to enjoy a small piece of geography that doesn’t even warrant a dot on the Ohio map called Ruggle’s Beach. I don’t think the rooms in the small hotel where we stay have been updated since the 1920’s, but the sand is still soft and the water of Lake Erie that laps gently upon the shoreline is still wet. And that suits us just fine. Simple pleasures.
Born into a family of three siblings I have one sister who’s a prima ballerina a bit past her prime and a sister who, I believe, is a saint. Well, the folks went two out of three…could have been worse. I know a lot of couples who are oh for three.
I’ve dropped out of some of the finest schools in the country- but that’s okay by me. I’m pretty happy with where, and who, I am. Few people get to lead a literary life. And fewer yet, even know what it is that would truly make them happy. I’ve had the good fortune to know, and experience, both.
